Navel Strike (Navel Series: Navel Bell)

 

Navel Strike begins with casts of people’s navels—intimate traces of individual bodies.

The navel is both a hole and a surface: a site where inside and outside meet, and a mark of how the body is continuous with the world.

This minute indentation is enlarged and transformed into a bell cast using the traditional Korean bronze bell technique from the Silla period.

This bell does not exist without the act of striking, and it is not complete without the experience of vibration.

Here, material, action, and experience mutually constitute one another.

A personal bodily trace passes through an experience of contact and expands into an experience of resonance.

Navel Strike condenses an Indra-like worldview—in which the body exists as both hole and surface,
and as a continuous part of the entire cosmos—into the structure of a bell.
